Technical Visit to Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir
Organized by Younger Members Section Committee, IET Hong Kong
About
Step into the hidden heart of Hong Kong’s water heritage and uncover a marvel of early 20th‑century engineering beneath the city’s surface. This upcoming technical visit explores the Ex‑Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir—better known as the Bishop Hill Service Reservoir—a remarkable testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship behind Hong Kong’s early waterworks development.
Built in 1904 as part of the Kowloon Waterworks Gravitation Scheme, the underground reservoir once supplied fresh water to Kowloon Tong, Sham Shui Po, and Tai Hang Tung. Today, it stands as both a vital piece of infrastructural history and an architectural gem, officially recognized as a Grade I Historic Building since June 2021.
Beneath Bishop Hill lies a breathtaking circular chamber adorned with Roman‑inspired brick arches, granite columns, and vaulted concrete ceilings—an enduring demonstration of classical civil engineering excellence. The visit offers rare insights into the engineering challenges of large‑scale underground water infrastructure and the lasting durability achieved through traditional design and materials.
Beyond its historical significance, the event will also highlight the application of contemporary conservation engineering. Structural strengthening, crack monitoring, and safety enhancement works are being implemented to preserve the reservoir’s integrity while ensuring safe public access. This captivating journey through time and technology reveals how the artistry and precision of past engineers continue to inspire modern infrastructure preservation today.
