Technical Visit to Towngas Hall of Innovation & Hall of Future Energy

Organized by Younger Members Section Committee, IET Hong Kong

About

Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes journey through Towngas Hall of Innovation and Hall of Future Energy to find out! As two of Hong Kong's most forward-thinking showcases of energy engineering, these halls elegantly bridge corporate heritage, frontline R&D, and the next generation of sustainable infrastructure.

During the guided tour, you will trace the remarkable evolution of Towngas — from its origins in 1862 powering the city's gas street lamps, to its present-day diversification across city gas, telecommunications, water, new energy, manufacturing, and smart energy solutions. The experience begins at the Hall of Future Energy, where you will explore how hydrogen is generated through multiple pathways — including solar power, wind power, chemical plant by-products, and sulfur removal processes — and how this clean fuel can be deployed across vessels, power plants, steam and hot water systems, and cooling networks to dramatically reduce CO₂ emissions and improve urban air quality.

The journey then continues into the Hall of Innovation, opened in 2015 to celebrate breakthrough concepts developed in-house by Towngas colleagues across every facet of gas operations. Here you will discover Towngas' guiding philosophy of "G = i × i" — Growth through Innovation by Implementation — and the structured programmes that turn frontline ideas into industry-leading products. A highlight of the visit is the next-generation smart gas meter, equipped with an embedded microcontroller and sensor array that intelligently detects leakage scenarios and automatically shuts off the gas supply under three critical conditions: a continuous ultra-low flow over 24 hours (typically indicating a pinhole leak), a sudden surge in flow (indicating a dislodged gas pipe), or an extended period without scheduled on-site inspection — ensuring uncompromising safety for every household.

Bridging the gap between corporate innovation culture and real-world energy transition, this technical visit is a prime opportunity to log highly relevant CPD hours, network with industry peers, and witness first-hand how a legacy utility is reshaping itself for a hydrogen-driven future.
