Text Messaging was designed for mobile phones in the 1980s, however the history of interpersonal messaging goes back much further into history. This talk explores the various messaging technologies available before and around the 1980s and the events that led to the global phenomenon of mobile text messaging.

Speakers

Kevin Holley

Industry Standards Director and BT Distinguished Engineer - BT

Kevin Holley has had a 40 year career in telecoms, mostly covering international standards and primarily in the mobile arena.  He was instrumental in the design of SMS in the late 1980s and early 1990s and went on to lead Cellnet’s implementation of SMS and encourage SMS interconnect across networks.  He has played a leading role in the development of mobile standards for 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and now 6G.
