The Pen is (can be) Mightier Than the Sword
Combating cyber crime
About
The phrase “the pen is mightier than the sword” highlights the enduring power of ideas and communication over force. While violence may achieve short-term goals, written words and ideas have the ability to inspire change and shape societies for the long term.
Legal documents, philosophies, and treaties have impacted history more profoundly than physical battles, showing how knowledge and expression can be more influential than brute strength.
In cybersecurity, this concept is particularly relevant. Just as ideas can shape societies, information can shape security landscapes.
Cybercriminals may use technical tools (the “sword”) to attack, but robust security policies, legal frameworks, and shared intelligence (the “pen”) are vital in defending against threats. Building awareness, promoting collaboration, and enforcing laws in the digital space can neutralize cybercrime more effectively than mere technical defences alone.
In his presentation Craig will share how as Director of Cybercrime for INTERPOL, he has used non technical tools to help prevent, detect, investigate and disrupt cybercriminals delivered through INTERPOL’s Global Cybercrime Programme for their 196 member countries.
