The Rise of Intelligent Construction: Robotics, AI and Digital Twins

From robotic dogs to digital twins: enabling safer smarter project delivery

About

The construction industry is undergoing a significant technological transformation driven by advances in robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, Digital Twins, and real-time data integration. Traditional construction methods are increasingly being complemented — and in some cases replaced — by intelligent systems capable of monitoring, analysing, and optimising construction activities in real time.
This presentation explores how emerging technologies such as robotic inspection systems, autonomous drones, 3D laser scanning, Digital Twins, Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR) are reshaping modern construction and infrastructure management.

The session will demonstrate how technologies such as Boston Dynamics’ Spot robotic platform, Trimble 3D laser scanners, drone-based photogrammetry, and BIM-integrated Digital Twin systems can support safer, faster, and more data-driven project delivery. Particular emphasis will be placed on integrating real-time site data into intelligent digital environments that support predictive maintenance, automated monitoring, risk mitigation, progress tracking, and decision-making.

-The talk will also discuss:

-The role of Digital Twins in construction lifecycle management

-Robotics and autonomous inspection systems in hazardous environments

-3D scanning and point cloud technologies for intelligent asset monitoring

-Drone-enabled surveying and automated site inspection

-VR and AR applications for construction visualisation and training

-AI-supported risk management and predictive analytics

-Challenges associated with interoperability, implementation cost, and workforce upskilling

-The future vision of autonomous and intelligent construction sites

Drawing on both industrial experience and academic research, the presentation will provide practical insights into how automation and digital engineering technologies are accelerating the transition towards smart construction ecosystems.

The event will be of interest to engineers, construction professionals, surveyors, project managers, digital engineering specialists, researchers, and students interested in the future of infrastructure delivery and intelligent construction technologies
