Visit to the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre

About

This visit will demonstrate how the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), based at the University of Manchester (UoM), helps companies develop and launch new technologies, products and processes that exploit the remarkable properties of graphene and other 2D materials. The GEIC’s world-class facilities and resources, located in the Masdar Building, are supported by experienced and knowledgeable applications engineers and internationally renowned academics, working across a broad range of novel technologies and applications.

 

Presentation synopsis

The presentation will explore the fascinating world of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials. Starting with an overview of graphene, the first 2D material isolated and its extraordinary properties, including its remarkable strength, electrical conductivity, and flexibility. The presentation will then delve into the broader family of 2D materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride and molybdenum disulfide, highlighting their unique characteristics and potential applications.

Graphene, often hailed as a "wonder material," was first isolated at the University of Manchester in 2004 by Professors Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, a discovery that earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics. Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, making it the thinnest and one of the strongest materials known. The University of Manchester continues to be at the forefront of graphene research through its National Graphene Institute (NGI) and the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC). These institutes focus on advancing the understanding of graphene's properties and developing practical applications. The NGI provides state-of-the-art facilities for nanoscale research, while the GEIC collaborates with industry partners to translate graphene research into commercial products.

Business Development Officer - University of Manchester

Dayle has worked at the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), based at the University of Manchester, since 2018. Dayle is currently working as Business Development Officer and his role is focused around engaging with startups, SMEs and MNEs who are interested in utilising the remarkable properties of graphene and 2D materials into their products and applications. Out of Dayle's 7 years working at GEIC, 4 of these were spent working on our Bridging the Gap Programme which was a European Regional Development Funded (ERDF) programme that supported 103 companies achieving a total of £5.0 Gross Value Added (GVA)
