Visit to the Transport for Greater Manchester Traffic Control Centre
(Organised by Manchester Retired Members Section)
About
TfGM’s Traffic Control Centre uses hundreds of CCTV cameras and other data sources. They continually monitor the transport network in real time, making changes to the signal timings, when necessary, to manage traffic flow.
The traffic control system is made up of more than 2,400 installations - the largest number in the UK, outside London.
TfGM’s Control Centre uses a range of technologies including optimised traffic signal control through SCOOT (Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique) and MOVE (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation).
The control centre supports collaboration between event organisers, public transport controllers, local police and the media. The aim is optimise the transport network performance, manage incidents and keep people safe.
