The Case for Carbon is about carbon capture and storage and then carbon utilisation and release of energy. All this is presented using concepts in school science and, incredibly, it benefits those who live in parts of the world where food and water are scarce.

Cables are an increasing vital part of the electricity supply industry from HVDC interconnectors between the UK and Europe, to the export and inter-array cables of offshore windfarms. This talk will consider why cable owners carry out failure investigations and how the conclusions can be used to improve asset management. We’ll also look at some of the frequently used methodologies which can applied to any asset type, e.g. 5 Whys Analysis, the pros/cons of following these approaches, and some of the common analytical tools used during forensic investigations. Finally, we’ll use a cable case study to demonstrate how all these elements come together to give actionable outcomes following the investigation.

This talk will provide real world examples of Waste2Energy Anaerobic Digestion System applications that eliminate biodegradable waste from landfills and pave the way to achieving net-zero.

Thomas Collett will join us in April to provide an interesting analysis of "Our Universe under a Magnifying Glass". He is Professor of Astrophysics and a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, University of Portsmouth. Thomas graduated from Oxford University and undertook his PhD at Cambridge University.  He joined University of Portsmouth in 2016 as a post-doctoral research fellow. His research has been funded by the Royal Astronomical Society, University of Portsmouth, Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Royal Society.
