IMechE: The Engineer in Society
About
The IMechE Invite you to their talk, The Engineer in Society.
Engineers created the world we live in today, not only all the engineering and technological achievements that make up our society, but all the consequences and problems brought about by those achievements. For Engineers that means accountability and responsibility; accountability to society for what we have created, and responsibility to society for what we are now creating. The work of Engineers must no longer be done in isolation driven by the technological interests or market forces; it must be driven by the needs and values of our society. Our Institutions and Universities must now play a key role, not only in education and awareness, but also in guiding research that will provide impactful outcomes that will benefit our society; they must also provide the infrastructure and moral frameworks that Engineers will need to help them fulfil their role in society.
In this challenging and sometimes uncomfortable lecture, Geoff Baker will explore the role of Engineering in Society and put forward what he believes to be the role that Engineering Institutions and our Universities must play in supporting Engineers in meeting their responsibilities to society.
