Research journals and conferences are replete with machine learning that involve ever greater varieties of neural architectures. Machines can synthesize speech, language, pictures to the point where serious ethical - even legal - issues arise. It is all very impressive, and on occasion perhaps unsettling. And yet AI struggles with art in terms of analysis such as recognition, and synthesis such as generating images. This talk highlights these limits, explains why they are significant for the development of AI, and suggests possible ways forward.
