When the chips are down… how Meteor Inkjet beat the 2022 chip supply crisis

For companies and engineers involved in the production of electronic equipment, the last two years will be memorable for the challenging environment with supply chains, most significantly the chip supply crisis. In 2022 this was global news, and the effects were felt across a range of industries. This talk is the story of a small/medium sized engineering company supplying electronics to the industrial inkjet market, and how it navigated the shortage of vital devices needed to keep the wheels of industry turning. In addition to the engineering challenges faced to work around the availability of parts, the talk will cover what industrial inkjet is, and the established and emerging applications of the technology. David Horne is Vice President of Engineering at Meteor Inkjet Ltd based in Harston, Cambridge. David has a wealth of experience developing electronic and electro-mechanical products across a range of industries including industrial, medical, and aerospace. He is responsible for Meteor’s drive electronics solutions, leading the company’s development of high-quality products that meet customer’s needs. Prior to Meteor, David worked as an engineering consultant for TTP and as an electronics design engineer at GE Aviation Systems. He has a master’s degree (MEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nottingham University and is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Presidential Address: Engineers - Holding the keys to the future of humanity

Abstract of the Address: Engineers - holding the keys to the future of humanity “I am a proud Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IET. “My story is the journey from a tough northern socially deprived estate to the youngest professor of engineering and subsequently youngest Vice Chancellor in the UK – back in my home town of Huddersfield where it all began. It will incorporate some of the initiatives that are important to me including inspiring the younger generation, the importance of mentorship in creating engineering excellence and the development of engineers as inclusive leaders. “In my President’s Address, you’ll hear how the IET and its initiatives have been central to my professional life, and from some of the people I now work with, including actor Sir Patrick Stewart. People who, like me, believe that engineers and their pioneering work hold the keys to the future of humanity. “And it all started with a boy who had to save and save to buy a children’s electronics set, that sparked my love of engineering.”
